Enea Embedded Technology and AlgoTrim Introduce Code Compression for OSE™
AlgoTrim’s code compression technology reduces the size of instruction code in half, minimizing the memory requirements for mobile phones.
February 14, 3GSM World Congress, Cannes, France, 2005 - The embedded software company AlgoTrim and real-time operating system provider Enea today announced that AlgoTrim’s Code Compressor technology has been integrated with Enea’s OSE demand paging system.
The integration of AlgoTrim’s Code Compressor into Enea’s real-time operating system OSE significantly reduces code size and memory requirements for embedded devices like mobile phones. The code compression is particularly useful for manufacturers of cost-sensitive embedded devices, where memory footprint, performance, and power efficiency are the most important factors.

By using AlgoTrim’s code compression technology, the size of instruction code is reduced by approximately 50 percent for ROM images in typical embedded devices. The system decompresses pages on the fly when requested for execution.

The decompression is extremely fast and when reading pages from slow media, such as flash memory, the performance can exceed that of a non-compressed paged memory system. The system is currently designed for the 32-bit ARM instruction set architecture, including the 16-bit Thumb format. AlgoTrim builds the code compression system on a patent-pending loss-less compression method. The method is unique in that it allows for random access of compressed data, and in that the decompression is extremely fast — especially on 32-bit RISC microprocessors.
